We have discovered a card that we like and think is finally worth it.  It is from the community site livingunsinsured.com and it has no obligation to sign up or to register.  You simply go to their facebook page and obtain your card.  They ask you to like their page if you can, but you do not have to.

Here is a copy if the text from their pharmacy discount card page:

We purchased a license to this card because it doesn’t require any sign up or need for personal information.  Most cards want some personal info…,your name, address, phone number, email address, SS number, etc.  The

numbers on the card are the same for everyone.  They identify us and our license to offer the card,  but never you.  This card should keep working as long as we keep our license valid and the issuing company (HealthTrans) continues to offer the card.  We’d like to think both are likely ;-)

We’re offering the card to you as a thank you for helping spread the word about LIVING UNINSURED. Well, actually you can have the card even if you don’t spread the word now.  If you can use it or you know someone who can use it. it’s yours.  We figure that when you actually use it and it works for you, you’ll be inclined to tell your BFF anyway.

Here’s how it works…

If you are uninsured, when you go get your prescription filled, you’re probably going to pay the “list price”…like the Rack Rate at a hotel or MSRP at a car dealer.  When you have an insurance card, you get the benefit of two “discounts”.

  • Discount level 1 – All insurance companies either own or work with companies called Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs).  PBMs negotiated discounted rates with pharmacies in exchange for including them in their network.  The benefit of a pharmacy to be in a network is to get traffic (that’s you) with the expectation that you’ll buy more than the just your prescription.  (Why do you think there’s usually a wait and the pharmacy is always in the back of the store requiring you to walk past the aisles of merchandise).
  • Discount level 2 – With insurance cards, they usually “guarantee” you’ll only have to pay a flat fee for your prescription, after your deductible of course and if the medicine is on their formulary.  For this you pay and/or your employer pays a monthly fee part of which goes to pay for this additional discount and part of which goes to administration and profit.

There is no reason why you have to pay list prices for medications.  Whether brand name or generic, your prescription medication can be purchased with the level 1 discounts noted above. with up to 85% discount off list prices and an average of 46% on all medicines when using this card.  The card is valid at most pharmacies with almost 60,000 participating location nationwide.

Present the card with a valid prescription at a participating pharmacy, and your discounts will be applied.
